Cultivating a Collective Sanctuary: Our Evolution to the Community Agriculture and Wellness Hub
For a long time, Humble Home Gardens has operated with a simple but deeply intentional philosophy: working with nature, not against it. We have poured our energy into designing resilient pocket habitats, installing native ecosystems, and talking about how connected our personal wellness is to the soil beneath our feet.
But as we look out at the landscape of our community, it is clear that Naperville needs something bigger. The recent, deeply felt loss of our lease with Mayneland Farm will leave a profound gap in our local food system and in our community's shared spaces. Many people came to this farmstand because they could rely on safe, nutritional produce and cottage food goods.
Today, we are thrilled to pull back the curtain on a massive, heartfelt vision for the future: a formal proposal to build a 1-acre public asset right here in Naperville: The Community Agriculture and Wellness Hub.
The Vision for the Hub
This project is being structured as an innovative, zero-cash-draw Public-Private Partnership with the Naperville Park District. We are actively targeted to secure $389,201.00 in external grant capital to fully fund, permit, and construct the physical infrastructure, trade setups, and full-time professional staffing for the site.
Our blueprint relies on a collaborative, two-phase layout. First, we are requesting that Park District crews install level, code-compliant ADA pathways across an underutilized acre of public land. This framework will establish a permanent public skeleton. From there, our team and community networks will step directly into the leftover "pockets" to weave a beautiful, deeply functional, universal learning landscape:
The Farmstand & Food Pantry Hub: A community resource outbuilding featuring an exterior walk-in cooler for fresh field harvests and an indoor commercial glass-door cooler dedicated entirely to a free, daily-access food pantry for our low-income neighbors.
The Community Tool Lending & Seed Share Shed: A staffed checking station filled with high-quality gardening and landscaping tools available for any Naperville resident to borrow at zero cost to grow their own food at home.
The Accessible Learning Labs: A non-climate-controlled, solar-vented seeding greenhouse for ambient propagation workshops, running directly alongside an ADA Raised Bed Lab filled with elevated table-beds and ergonomic hand tools for seniors and individuals with disabilities looking for accessible education and connection to nature.
Biodiverse Canopies: A scaled open-field vegetable area, a multi-layered permaculture food forest, and a mini dwarf fruit orchard.
To honor the tranquility of our shared park lands and push our environmental values to the absolute limit, our entire operation will run on a 100% electric, zero-emission EV commercial battery platform. No heavy engine noise, no fossil fuels—just clean, modern stewardship.
The Evolution: Transitioning from an LLC to a Nonprofit
To make this massive vision a physical reality, Humble Home Gardens is undergoing a profound structural evolution. I am actively dissolving our current small business LLC and incorporating our entire brand as a formal 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
Why this transition? Because a community sanctuary belongs to the community.
Moving our existing, recognized brand name, our digital Squarespace infrastructure, and our active local audience over to a nonprofit structure means we aren’t launching from scratch. It gives us immediate institutional readiness that major grant foundations (like the Conagra Brands Foundation or the USDA) look for. Most importantly, it legally guarantees our structure: 100% of all revenues generated through our social enterprise tracks—including our farmstand, public workshops, native installation consulting, and future CSA boxes—will be legally locked to be reinvested straight back into the hub's soil, plants, and public programming.
Our leadership team is expanding, too. I will be stepping forward as your Founder, Director, and Head Gardener. Joining our board of directors to bring this acre to life is Jacky, our new Operations & Community Outreach Director, and Lisa, our Farm Director and Gardener. Together alongside an assistant farm manager and an incredible network of local volunteers, we won't just be sitting behind clipboards—we are certified plant nerds who will be sweating in the rows, working the soil, and keeping this park land immaculate 52 weeks a year.
